Nitrate in Water
The Nitrate Concentration in Rivers and wastewater can be measure directly to give a fast and accurate result using a Nitrate combination ISE and a portable Ion Meter. Some environmental applications require the measurement of Ammonium to provide a picture of the total Nitrogen present in the stream. This method is the same except that an Ammonium ISE is used. A method for this is available on this site
Nitrate in Water: The Method
Equipment Required:
3021 Nitrate Ion Selective Electrode
QP459 Portable Ion Meter
21311 Nitrate Standard 1000ppm (500ml)
30311 Nitrate ISAB solution (500ml)
The Method
Prior to the direct measurement you will need to calibrate the Ion Meter and electrode. Prepare a 100 and 1000ppm standard and to 50ml of each in a beaker add 2ml of ISAB. Follow the calibration instructions on the QP459 display.
Collect 50ml of sample and add 2ml of ISAB. Place the 3021 Nitrate ISE in the solution and press READ on the meter. When the reading is stable the auto end point feature will freeze the reading.
Read or store the result in the internal memory. This can be saved to Excel for further processing.
Rinse the probe in clean water and store dry.
